Sunnyvale, CA, December 05, 2013 - Boopsie, Inc., the worldwide leader in mobile apps for libraries tracks unique mobile usage data for libraries through its proprietary and soon-to-be-released Boopsie Analytics service.
Boopsie has been actively monitoring market share data in the libraries industry for over a dozen leading mobile platforms, and has noticed a startling change in direction that appears to be a leading indicator of bigger changes ahead.
The use of iPhone and Android mobile platforms among library patrons was relatively consistent for the first 9 months of 2013, states Tony Medrano, Boopsies CEO. But, in October, we noticed a drastic decline in the number of iPhone users and a correspondingly sharp rise in Android users.
The sudden change in iPhone vs. Android market share data uncovered by Boopsie Analytics from September to October 2013 is especially significant as it contains both the largest month-over-month decline in iPhone use (-2.38%) and the largest month-over-month rise in Android use (+2.91%) among mobile users of libraries' catalog and non-catalog services, like eBooks.
Is the tide turning in favor of Android, or is this solely a trend in mobile platforms for libraries?
In this study, Boopsie examined the unique users of over 2500 library locations on twelve different mobile platforms from January 2013 through October 2013. The iPhone usage statistics derived from Boopsie Analytics mimicked iPhones share of the US market (40.6%) until last month.
Libraries should be aware that only 41% of their patrons use iPhones to access their services on mobile apps, says Medrano. iPhone-only solutions neglect nearly 60% of library patrons; and both the raw number and percent market share of these non-iPhone users is growing.
