Tamils for Obama Congratulated Sri Lanka's Northern Provincial Council on Adopting Crucial Resolutions

The Sri Lankan Northern Provincial Council (NPC) passed resolutions on January 27 which called for an international investigation of war crimes committed during the last stages of the Sri Lankan ethnic war. The NPC called it genocide, rejected the Sri Lankan LLRC, called for international investigations into disappearances at the end of the war and the mass grave discovered at Mannar, and named Ms. Ananthi Sasitharan to represent the NPC at the UN Human Rights Commission session in Geneva in March.

New York, NY, February 03, 2014 - "We are encouraged that the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) has passed these resolutions," said a press spokesman for Tamils for Obama. "These are things that have always needed to be said, and now the NPC has said them. Not only said them, but put them in writing and made them an official act of a government body."

The spokesman's comments referred to several resolutions passed by the NPC on January 27 and reported in the Salem-News of January 28,2014 under the headline "NPC Passes Resolution to Probe War Crimes Committed in Sri Lanka" (Click here). One of the resolutions declared that operations "akin to genocide" have taken place on the island, and called for an international investigation.

Another resolution stated that the Tamils in the northeast have no trust in any investigation carried out by the Sri Lankan government. "By passing this resolution," said NPC member Mr. Sivagilingam, "the NPC shows that it particularly rejects the GOSL's Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission."

The NPC also passed a resolution calling for international investigations into disappearances at the end of the war and the mass grave discovered at Mannar.

The NPC then named Ms. Ananthi Sasitharan to represent the NPC at the UN Human Rights Commission session in Geneva in March.

"All of these resolutions reassure us," the spokesman said. "These resolutions are brave, bold, and undeniable. We are grateful that the NPC did this. We congratulate them."

Tamils for Obama is a politically active group of Tamil Americans. They believe that over 70,000 Tamil civilians were massacred during the last weeks of the Sri Lankan ethnic war. They have also watched the behavior of the Sri Lankan Singhalese victors after the war, and strongly conclude that Tamils in Sri Lanka will only be safe when this unfortunate island is divided into two states.
