GCL publishes Union College to Host Symposium Targeting Eastern KY Challenges

As part of the Union College Redbud Festival of Appalachian Culture, an educational symposium is scheduled on the Union College campus.
Barbourville, KY, February 11, 2014 - As part of the Union College Redbud Festival of Appalachian Culture, an educational symposium is scheduled on the Union College campus.

Called "Re-Imagining Development in Easter Kentucky: A Symposium on History and Place," the event is scheduled for April 11 at 1 p.m. in the Rector Little Theatre.

According to Amanda Fickey, Ph.D., a Union professor and organizer of the symposium, the event will explore current economic challenges facing eastern Kentucky.

"Speakers at the event will foster a dialogue between local, regional and state leaders, community members and Union College students and faculty regarding the need for practical development solutions grounded in a critical understanding of our region's history and culture," Fickey said.

Scheduled to present are: Mandy Lambert, acting commissioner of the Department for Business Development and interim executive director of the Office of Entrepreneurship Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development; Teresa Montgomery, Knox County extension agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service; Kent Whitorth, executive director of the Kentucky Historical Society; Hal B. Goode, president & CEO of the Kentucky Association for Economic Development; and Jeff Spradlin, director of the University of Kentucky Robinson Scholars Program, University of Kentucky Appalachian Center.

The symposium is sponsored by the Union College Appalachian Studies Program, the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, the Kentucky Association for Economic Development, the Kentucky Historical Society, the Knox County Arts, Crafts and Humanities Council, the University of Kentucky Robinson Scholars Program and the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service.
